BREAKING SOCIETAL BARRIERS FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN SIERRA LEONE UNEMPLOYMENT FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Abu Bakarr Bangura
Having got a Master’s degree in engineering during a difficult educational system in the university of sierra
leone, F.B.C. to be specific. With all the inaccessibility like infrastructural barriers (stairs), I was able to
complete the entire process by getting one of the best results. For that reason, I was giving an award by
the university as one of the best students.
From a publication that I saw on Awoko newspaper dated on the 16Th June, 2020. I sent in my application and I was called upon to take an entrance exam conducted by the institution (Bank of Sierra Leone), and I was called upon again for an interview.
After the interview, I was congratulated by the panelists as one of the most excellent candidates in the entire process but, they said sorry to me as they appreciated my effort. They also told me about the infrastructural barriers that the building has, which will be challenging for me but they told me to go home as they will reach me through my phone. Since then nobody got back to me.
This is a clear manifestation that education for person with disability in Sierra Leone is totally useless as a result of my disability as society cannot give me the opportunity to explore my ability.
