Sixteen-Year-Old Girl Escaped Forced Circumcision

Sixteen-Year Old Girl Escaped Forced Circumcision

A Sixteen-year-old  Saidata (Surname withheld) has gone into hiding after escaping an enforced initiation into Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by the Bondo Society, a powerful all-female secret society in Sierra Leone. During a holiday visit to Mateboi village in the Karene District, Saidata was abducted on August 9, 2024, with her aunt's consent. Fortunately, with the help of a friend, Aminata Kamara, she managed to flee through the forest and return to Freetown.

Despite her escape, the girl's situation remains perilous. Her relatives are intent on forcing her to undergo the FGM procedure. With Saidata's mother deceased, her aunt has taken on the role of guardian. Aminata, who assisted in Mariatu's escape, has been unable to reach her for two months and fears for her safety.

This distressing situation underscores the formidable challenges faced by anti-FGM advocates in Sierra Leone, where the practice is deeply entrenched in cultural and political norms, and secret societies like the Bondo wield considerable power.

The international community is urged to rally behind anti-FGM initiatives and to protect vulnerable individuals like Mariatu. It is essential for authorities to investigate her case, ensure her safety, hold those responsible accountable, and support educational and awareness campaigns aimed at eradicating FGM. Mariatu’s story should serve as a catalyst for change, safeguarding future generations.
